Ten

Gray followed Hali when she left the beach. It wasn’t something he planned on doing. It just happened, and he only felt mildly guilty about it. His vehicle was in a restaurant parking lot, which meant he had to hop in a cab in the hotel parking lot. Hali parked near the back, and he managed to keep distance between them for the trip. If the cab driver was suspicious about why Gray demanded that he follow Hali, he didn’t ask. The huge tip Gray dropped on the driver when they stopped in a pretty cul de sac likely had something to do with it.

Hali parked on the street in front of a small ranch house. Gray exited the cab on the corner and watched as she seemingly paced back and forth in front of her vehicle — was she gearing herself up? — and then squared her shoulders before heading toward the front door of the house.

Gray drifted down the sidewalk until Hali had disappeared inside, and then made a beeline for the side of the house so he could look through the windows. Inherently he knew he was in the wrong for doing it, but he couldn’t stop himself. Hali might’ve agreed to share information, but she was obviously not sharing all the information she had. He found that annoying.

His shifter hearing meant he had no trouble making out the conversation inside, and when the voices moved to the back of the house — likely to a patio — he settled in the shade behind a bush to listen.

“It’s rare that you visit without an invitation,” an older female voice drawled. “Usually, I have to browbeat you to get you here.”

“Oh, don’t give me grief, Martha,” Hali drawled. “I’m busy most days. I am running my own business.”

“I’ve noticed. That doesn’t mean your responsibilities to the coven have fallen by the wayside. We all have to do things we’re not always comfortable with. You must learn balance.”

Coven? Gray cocked his head. Was Hali visiting her coven leader? Now he was even more intrigued.

“Thanks for the fortune cookie advice,” Hali drawled. “I’m here about something specific, though.”

“I figured. You never do anything without thinking it through.”

Hali snorted. “That’s not what you said when I was a kid.”

“Well, you were a tempestuous child. Your moods have evened out a bit now that you’re an adult. Tell me what’s going on.”

“Girls — or young women to be more apt — are going missing in the area near the resort. One of them turned up dead last night.”

“And you think there’s something magical about these deaths?”

Hali hesitated. “I don’t know,” she said finally, blowing out a sigh. “I just … don’t know.”

“What do you know?”

“Not much. The sirens are on the lookout. I’m on the lookout. Others … are on the lookout.”

“What others?”

“Just … others.”

Gray smirked to himself at Hali’s evasive nature. She wasn’t going to mention him. Well, that was just fine with him. If he didn’t get on her coven’s radar, so much the better.
